The frugal food round-up!

Updated on 17 July 2009 | 3 Comments

We round up the best grocery, snack and restaurant deals around.

There are some great new food deals around this week - if you know where to look. On the downside, the final countdown has begun on several of the best meal deals out there, so act now before it's too late!

Supermarket offers

We'll start with a round-up of the best supermarket deals:

Deep discounter Lidl has some particularly good offers on cheap fruit and veg this week. Deals include 200g of raspberries for 99p, bunches of spring onions for 29p, 1kg of nectarines for 99p and savoy cabbages for 39p each.

Sainsbury's has BOGOF deals on dozens of items, including fresh chicken, cheese, crisps, bacon, sausages, Magnum ice creams, pizza and lots more. Click on the 'buy one add one free' box on the Sainsbury's Groceries homepage to see the full range of goods.

As the milk price war picks up pace, ASDA has started selling two litres of Arla milk for just 50p.

And there are more 'dine at home' deals for you to sink your teeth into. Marks & Spencer is currently offering a less pricy alternative to its 'two dine for £10' package, in the form of a £5 meal for two.

It's available in stores all day, every day, and you can choose from a selection of 10" pizzas, plus garlic bread and a salad. On the downside, wine and dessert aren't included. And although the package is marketed as being for two people, I suspect I would get through that little lot all by myself...

Morrisons has also got in on the 'dine at home' action, and now offers its own £8 pizza meal for two. You choose one of a selection of its 'The Best' pizzas, and it comes with a salad bag or garlic bread, one of two dessert choices and a bottle of Canti Pinot Grigio wine.

If you fancy a drink and are happy with the wine on offer, I think this deal works out much better value than Marks & Spencer's £5 offering. The offer ends this Sunday though (July 19th), so you'll have to act quickly!

Best restaurant deals

Cheap and cheerful Greggs is running a new meal deal: You can currently choose one of a selection of (albeit fairly basic) sandwiches, plus a standard bag of Walkers crisps and a 500ml bottle of mineral water, all for £1.99.

At Millie's Cookies, you can still get your hands on a print-off voucher booklet which includes various 2 for 1 deals on cookies and ice cream. The vouchers expire on 31st October.

And you can also claim a free coffee at Pret a Manger. Pick up a free Pret Card in-store, register it on the Pret website and it will be charged with the price of a coffee, up to the value of £2.10. Then visit Pret again and claim that caffeine!

Grow-Your-Own tip

Finally, a heads-up for all grow-your-own beginners; earlier this year I headed into my local 99p Store and stocked up on some seeds, compost and huge plant pots.

For 99p, I picked up a bumper pack containing seeds for six different vegetables and herbs. I suspected that bargain basement seeds would produce poor results, but I must say I'm pleasantly surprised.

I'm now beginning to reap the fruits of my labours (literally), and am proud to report that in the Cowdy household, we're now eating home-grown tomatoes and peppers, as well as various vigorously-sprouting herbs. It seems that cheap doesn't have to be nasty!
