Go on holiday for £10!

One hotel chain is offering rooms for just £10 this summer.

The sun is out, the birds are singing, the Tube is unbearable – that’s right, summer is upon us! As a result, many of us are starting to daydream about getting away from work for a couple of weeks, to put our feet up and relax.

And thanks to one new offer, that break could cost even less than you thought!

A hotel room for £10!

On Thursday 9 June, Travelodge will be launching its Tennertastic sale, with 348,000 rooms across the chain’s various hotels available for just £10.

The rooms cover dates from 10 June to 30 September at more than 450 hotels across the UK. What’s more, as you only pay for the room itself rather than the number of people staying in the room, a family of four can enjoy a family room for £2.50 each - an absolute bargain!

Have a cheap holiday

Find out how to cut the cost of your flights, get discounts, tip correctly, spend wisely, get cashback and most importantly, cut the cost of your holiday.

One of the reasons that this deal is likely to prove popular is that more and more of us are choosing to holiday in the UK, rather than head overseas – the appallingly named staycation.

With money tight and the cost of living continuing to rise, it can prove a little tricky to justify the expense of heading to sunnier climes for the summer break. Instead, it’s a bit cheaper to head to somewhere else in the UK to enjoy the four days of sunshine that make up the usual British summer.

According to a survey by Travelodge, as many as 35% of us plan to holiday in the UK this summer, up 10% from last year.

So where are going? Listed below are the top ten staycation destinations according to Travelodge.

  1. 1) Cornwall
  2. 2) Lake District
  3. 3) Devon
  4. 4) London
  5. 5) Edinburgh
  6. 6) Scottish Highlands
  7. 7) Wales (North &  South)
  8. 8) Blackpool
  9. 9) Great Yarmouth
  10. 10) Scarborough

So with a hotel secured for just a tenner, what about your other holiday-related costs? How can you keep those to a minimum too?

    Travel

Once you’ve decided where you want to go, the next question is how you get there.

Trains are the best bet for many of us, but they are not always particularly cheap. You can cut train costs though.

    • Book early

Getting that seat booked well in advance can make a big difference to how much it will cost you. For example, a one-way ticket from London to Edinburgh on 10 June will set you back about £146 at the time of writing. However, the same journey on 12 August is as cheap as £47, a third of the price!

The timetables are set 12 weeks in advance so set a reminder to ensure you get the cheapest possible tickets.

    • Check singles

Bizarre as it sounds, getting two separate single tickets rather than a return can actually work out cheaper!

    • Split your tickets

Again a strange one, but splitting your tickets can also save you money. So rather than getting a ticket from London to Edinburgh it may be cheaper to get a ticket from London to York and then from York to Edinburgh. Check out Splityourticket.co.uk to see how much you could save this way.

If you don’t fancy taking the train, you may prefer to drive. However, with petrol costs continuing to rise this can prove pretty expensive. For tips on how to keep your petrol use when driving to a minimum check out How to beat record petrol prices! You might also like to pay for your petrol with a Barclaycard credit card – the firm has launched a cashback offer of 10% on your petrol spending over the next couple of months, up to a maximum of £30!

    Things to do

Once you get to your holiday destination, you need to find some fun things to do. We are very fortunate in the UK to have so many free museums and galleries at our disposal, so be sure to check out whether you have any decent ones nearby.

If you like a bit of nature, check out the free days out section of the National Trust website. There are all sorts of things you can do, absolutely gratis, from going fossil spotting in Dorset to kite flying in Bedfordshire - there’s something for everyone.

One site that’s really good for finding free or cheap activities for you and all the family is Enjoy England. It even has its own Budget Days Out section which is well worth a look.

One way that I keep costs for days out low is to use my Clubcard vouchers. I put all of my spending every month on the Tesco Clubcard credit card, so I get a nice healthy stack of vouchers each month. But I don’t have to use them in the supermarket – I can trade them in for vouchers for all sorts of activities, from theme parks to historical days out.

    Food

Undoubtedly one of the best things about going away on holiday is not having to cook or do the washing up every night. And even if you’re staying in the UK, you can still enjoy a cracking night of food without breaking the bank.
