35 things you can get for £5 or less!

Find out how to get flights, pizzas, cinema tickets, coffee, DVDs, smoke detectors, clothes and even House of Fraser gift cards for no more than a fiver.

The cost of living is rising but there are still plenty of bargains to be had - and many of them cost no more than £5. Don't believe me? Then check these out:

Travel

Can't travel far for a fiver? That's where you're wrong. Book before midnight this Thursday and you could snap up some of Ryanair's £5 seats.

Or book the Megatrain and you could scoot up or down the country for as little as £1 each way (plus 50p booking fee). You can find more tips to save on train travel in this article. And if you apply through this link for your Family and Friends Railcard you can save 25% at the moment by using the code halfterm25.

And although it's a quid more than a fiver, you can currently get European travel insurance from Tesco for just £6!

Eating out

Who can eat out for a fiver these days? You can! Sign up to the Pizza Express "Leggera lunch" deal on Facebook where you can print a voucher for you and a friend to enjoy two Leggera pizzas for £10.

Print out this voucher and you can save 50% off your food bill at Pizza Hut, or buy one main meal and you can get another for just £1 at Zizzi's  or Ask (this should easily be possible for a fiver a head). Or get two pizzas for £10 at Fire and Stone.

Grab a carvery meal, plus an ice cream sundae for up to four people at a Toby carvery for £5 a head. Or snap up two burgers plus fries to share for £5 each at GBK.

Alternatively, if you have an Orange phone (or send off for a free SIM) take advantage of the Orange Wednesdays deal with Pizza Express. You and a friend can buy two cinema tickets for the price of one (text costs 35p), plus snap up two pizzas at Pizza Express for the price of one (which should be less than a fiver each). And they'll even throw in free garlic bread or dough balls. Yum!

Cinema

If you live in London, like independent films but hate paying £10+ per ticket, why not become a member of the Prince Charles cinema? For the princely sum of a £1 per month you can see matinee performances for just £1.50, or head over in the evenings or weekends from just £3.50 per ticket.

Family films

Head to your local Odeon on a weekend morning and a family of four could see a Kids Club film for a fiver (one child's ticket costs £2.50 and lets an adult in for free).

And Vue has a similar deal for just £1.70 per child (inc. free adult).

DVDs

Or watch a film at home - the Play sale has loads of DVDs from just £2.99 including teen favourite Twilight. Or check out the HMV sale with DVDs such as Pretty Woman starting at just £3, and boxsets from a fiver.

Food & Drink

Stretch your £5 by "eating the seasons" - food is tastier and costs far less than when it has to be flown in. Carrots cost just 60p/kg at Sainsbury's while asparagus spears are a whopping £2.99/kg. Just adjust your menu to suit.

Or check out the Student value section at Sainsbury, where you can get Basics cornflakes for 46p, pasta sauce for 36p and strawberry jam for 38p, as well as all purpose cleaner for 28p (although students may not see any use for that!). A fiver could cover a whole basket!

And of course, don't forget our very own feed five for a fiver and frugal recipes.

Instant coffee

Incidentally, Which? recently carried out a blind taste test of instant coffee - and you may be surprised to hear that while brand name Nescafe came first, it was hotly pursued by Sainsbury's own brand "Full Roast" and Aldi's Alcafe Rich Roast.

With the 200g jar of each costing £4.49, £1.57 and £1.49 respectively, switching to an own-brand would mean you could afford a lot more coffee for £5!

Coffee

But if you like your coffee ready prepared, sign up for a Starbucks card, load it with a fiver and use it in-store rather than cash. You'll then be entitled to free shots of syrup, whipped cream and speciality milks whenever you buy a coffee.

Plus, every time you buy a bag of whole bean coffee you'll get a free Tall beverage of your choice.

Clothes

Need some new clothes? Then refresh your wardrobe while helping a charity by snapping brand new Per Una items from Oxfam from just £2.99. The Play sale also has clothing items from just £5.

Freebies

And finally, what's better than paying a fiver? Paying absolutely nothing!

Borrow books for free at the library. Take the kids to one of the UK's many fantastic (and free!) museums. Read newspapers for free online. And if you commute to London, don't buy the Evening Standard; pick up a free London Lite/London Paper instead.

Listen to free music at Spotify. Or make money by referring your friends for products and services you're happy with.

Free fire safety check

Book a free home visit from your local Fire officers - not only do they provide and fit a free smoke alarm if needed, they may arrive in a fire engine, which can cause great excitement on the street.

Free £5 gift voucher

Fill in your details, print out the voucher and claim a free £5 gift card in House of Fraser, to be spent in the Home department.

Or donate 5 (preferably kids) books to charity by dropping them into Ikea, and you'll receive a free £5 giftcard!

Name a star for free

And best of all, find out how you can name a star after you or a friend/family member for free!

So there you have it - 35 top bargains to be had for £5 or less.
