In 2014 the discovery of a gold cache in a field in Phatthalung, Thailand sparked a local gold rush. The treasures were unearthed when a farmer started digging up the ground to plant four palm oil trees, with the discoveries including gold sheets, ornaments and coins.

Because of the treasure laws in Thailand, successful treasure hunters could decide whether to hand over their gold to the Fine Arts Department, which later took control of the field and said the gold sheeting matched the precious metal used to cover Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan (pictured), a Buddhist temple. Although the total value of the hoard hasn't been revealed, one treasure-seeker said he sold a 5x5cm gold sheet for more than 40,000 baht ($1.2k).
