American comedy How I Met Your Mother (HIMYM) took viewers by storm from the moment it premiered in 2005. The sitcom follows the story of Ted Mosby and his circle of friends in New York City, and is framed around Ted telling his future children about the events between 2005 and 2013 that led to him meeting their mother. Their mother's identity remains a mystery to the audience up until the very last episode, with the show's unique premise setting it apart from other comedies. 

The show ran for nine successful seasons until 2014, scooping up 21 prestigious awards along the way – and 91 nominations!

The reason for the advance filming was that Fonseca was just 18 when HIMYM began. As the showrunners didn’t know how long the series would last, they wanted to prevent the teen actress from ageing on screen.

By filming all her scenes during season one, Fonseca had ample opportunity to pursue other projects while HIMYM was still airing. This included blockbuster movies like Hot Tub Time Machine.

Outside of the movies, Fonseca has continued to have starring roles on the small screen too. Between 2010 and 2013, she appeared in the CW thriller series Nikita, as well as Marvel’s Agent Carter between 2015 and 2016. Ashley Williams played Victoria, a recurring character who made appearances in seasons one, seven, eight, and nine of HIMYM. As the on-and-off girlfriend of Ted Mosby, Victoria was a fan favourite contender for the mysterious "mom" character.

David Henrie played Luke, the teenage son of Ted Mosby. Like his on-screen sister Lyndsy Fonseca, he appeared in every episode of the sitcom, and his scenes were filmed in the early days of the show to prevent on-screen ageing. Naturally, he also had to sign a non-disclosure agreement that prevented him from spoiling the show's ending.

Although Henrie was just 16 years old when he was cast in HIMYM, the veteran child star already had a long list of acting credits to his name, including recurring roles in the Disney Channel show That’s So Raven and the Fox sitcom Method & Red.

Arguably, Henrie is most famous for his role as Justin Russo in the Disney Channel show Wizards of Waverly Place, in which he starred alongside Selena Gomez between 2007 and 2012. During this period, he also appeared in other Disney shows, including The Suite Life on Deck and Jonas.

Major spoiler alert: Cristin Milioti played quirky bass player Tracy McConnell, who was eventually revealed to be the future wife of Ted Mosby and the show's "Mother" character. 

Although she was a crucial character for the show's entire run, Milioti wasn’t actually cast until season eight. Wayne Brady played the recurring role of James Stinson, the older half brother of the main character, Barney. Brady made his HIMYM debut in the show's second series and had a starring role in 13 episodes throughout the show's nine-season run.

The comedian and actor was already familiar to audiences as the host of The Wayne Brady Show, which aired between 2001 and 2004, and had also been a long-time contributor to the improv TV series Whose Line Is It Anyway?

Unlike some of her co-stars, Hannigan was already a screen veteran before landing the part of Lily. She rose to fame thanks to her role as Michelle Flaherty in the American Pie movie series, and also won an army of fans during her time as Willow Rosenberg in supernatural TV show Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Before HIMYM, Segel’s silver screen credits included comedies like Dead Man on Campus and Slackers. His breakout role was in teen series Freaks and Geeks, in which he played Nick Andopolis between 1999 and 2000. While the actor and comedian Bob Saget never appeared on-screen in HIMYM, he was still a core part of the show: he provided the voice of the older Ted Mosby and narrated all nine seasons.

The womanising Barney Stinson was played by Neil Patrick Harris who, like his fellow main cast members, was taking home a hefty $225,000 (£175.6k) per episode towards the end of HIMYM.

Before landing the role of Barney, Harris was already an accomplished actor. His breakout role was as the lead character in medical sitcom Doogie Howser, M.D., which ran between 1989 and 1993, and he also had guest parts in Will & Grace, Numb3rs, and Law & Order: Criminal Intent.
