TMF Poll: Green If The Price Is Right

Updated on 16 December 2008 | 0 Comments

Our Fool poll suggests that even non-greens will do more for the environment if the price is right.

Three weeks ago, we asked Fools about their attitudes to Green issues and we discovered that even amongst rigid, non-green consumers there is some evidence of greenness, provided financial benefits are tangible.

Six out of ten non-green consumers claim that over a quarter of the lighting in their homes is energy saving. More than 75% of steadfast, non-green consumers also switch off electrical appliances completely rather than leave them in stand-by mode because it saves them money.

But once there's no financial incentive, non-green consumers don't do much to help the environment. One in four non-green consumers do not recycle any of their household waste, and just 4% use green energy tariffs.

So it seems that if governments round the world are really serious about combating global warming, there will have to be more financial incentives to do the right thing. Sadly, I reckon that higher taxes on car and plane travel are inevitable.
