The banking group says it will consider compensation for NatWest, Royal Bank of Scotland and Ulster Bank customers left out of pocket by Wednesday night's outage.

The Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) Group is offering compensation to customers affected by its latest system outage on Wednesday night.

The group’s systems went down due to a "hardware fault", leaving people unable to make cash withdrawals, pay with their debit card or use online or phone banking services.

NatWest, RBS and Ulster Bank customers are being asked to contact their bank, which will review claims on a “case-by-case basis”.

“Any customer who was left out of pocket due to this outage should get in touch so we can put things right for them”, says a tweet on the RBS Twitter account.

If you want to get in touch with the banks here are their telephone numbers:

NatWest: 0845 788 8444

RBS: 0845 724 2424

Ulster Bank in Northern Ireland: 0800 231232

Ulster Bank in Republic of Ireland: 1800 205100

The group says the outage only occurred between 9pm and 11pm on Wednesday night.

Another tweet said: “Problem was caused by a hardware fault unrelated to the issues experienced last summer and was much easier to fix.” The bank however did acknowledge that the problem was “still unacceptable”.

Last June, the group’s systems were down for several days, eventually costing RBS £125 million in compensation.
