Asda sparks new supermarket petrol price war with 2p cut

A fresh price battle has kicked off among the major UK supermarkets.

Four major supermarkets have entered into a fresh petrol price war.

Asda led the way by announcing it would cut its fuel prices by up to 2p a litre nationwide from tomorrow.

Motorists filling up at any of Asda’s 218 forecourts will pay no more than 130.7 pence per litre for unleaded or 134.7 pence per litre for diesel.

Not to be outdone, Sainsbury’s, Morrisons and Tesco were quick to react and match the 2p reduction.

Fall in costs

Asda said it was making the move after a fall in the wholesale costs of unleaded and diesel.

The supermarket wanted to pass on the benefits to its customers across the country.

Andy Peake, Asda’s Petrol Trading Director said:  “We’re giving our customers the opportunity to fill up their cars with lower priced fuel, putting much needed cash back in their pockets.

"Our national price cap benefits everyone across the country, meaning that no-one filling up at Asda will be forced to pay a premium for their fuel because of where they live.”

Good news

AA president Edmund King said drivers would welcome the news of fuel price reductions at the pumps, as the price of petrol and diesel both crept up by around 1p a litre last month.

He called on all retailers to cut fuel prices to reflect the market price at the pumps

In the AA’s latest June fuel price report unleaded prices stand at 134.6 pence per litre on average while diesel prices are on average 139.2 pence per litre. The price difference between the two fuels has fallen to 4.6 pence per litre.

Petrol is therefore back to what I paid in May near Falmouth at Asda. What a con. A quick reduction with lots of publicity and straight back up with no media mention at all! What a load of crap we get from our media. Each rise should be reported widley so we can see what we are getting charged. The only way is up as the new BOE pillock is hell bent on ruining sterling through QE which will means the price of fuel, in dollers of course, will escalate rapidly. So fill the cans now as you will be paying much more later this year for uel - and gas and everything else that is imported whch is pretty well everything. Still I wonder if his salry will be paid in Canadian Dollers?

In my locality of the East Midlands the supermarkets are currently at 130.7/9 which is only a 1p decrease from the previous price. There is still some elasticity in prices at the pumps but any help is better than none. If we cast our minds back a couple of years though prices were considerably lower than what we currently have got used to! It wasn't so long ago that we were paying 80 - 90p per litre and as usual when you go to the USA their fuel is so much cheaper - as I found when visiting my nephew in Denver recently who is able to run 4 different vehicles at one time or another.. It is this one particular factor that has been fuelling monthly inflation more and more but of course we couldn't expect our millionaire Chancellor to recognise that - although to be fair he has ditched some eye-watering intended duty increases so I suppose we have to be grateful for small crumbs of comfort.

Tesco currently 5p off litre if you spend £50 . Do Asda have loads of petrol stations? We have 2 near us minus the petrol. Glad to get any discount but with most petrol tanks 45-60 litres the offer is not so generous even if you fill to capacity.
