UK’s major supermarkets battle on the cost of fuel again.

A new fuel price war has kicked off among the UK’s major supermarkets just in time for the start of the school holidays.

Asda led the way by announcing it would be cutting up to 2p a litre off the cost of fuel starting from Tuesday. The supermarket says motorists will pay no more than 126.7p a litre for unleaded and no more than 129.7p a litre for diesel at its pumps.

Sainsbury’s was the next to move and match Asda with a cut of up to 2p a litre also starting from Tuesday. It said the reduction would apply at all 294 of its forecourts.

And Tesco has now also jumped into the fray by declaring a blanket 2p a litre cut across its network of filling stations from Tuesday.

The retailer said this would be in addition to savings customers can make using its Clubcard Fuel Save scheme, which can cut up to 20p a litre. Read more about it in Tesco launches Clubcard Fuel Save discount scheme.

Only Morrisons is yet to make a challenge as it says it's already competitive enough to sway motorists.

Mark Todd, Director of Retail Petrol at Morrisons, said: “Morrisons is already offering some of the cheapest fuel in the country. We’re aware of the opportunity to cut prices further and will be evaluating our pricing levels over the coming days to ensure we remain competitive.”
