With Easter just weeks away, we decided to carry out our annual Easter Egg blind taste test here at lovemoney.com.
This year, we decided to compare cheap eggs with three super-expensive ones, to find out whether paying more for your chocolate ensures you get a tastier egg.
The line up included:
- A Lidl bunny for £1.19
- A Cadbury’s Buttons egg for £1.69
- A Nestle Smarties egg for £2.08
- A Thornton’s Continental egg for £10.50
- A Marks & Spencer milk chocolate egg for £9.99
- A Waitrose Seriously Chocolately Milk Chocolate Egg for £12.99
The experiment
Now, I’m not saying this was the most scientific experiment ever. There were only six tasters and we only tasted six eggs. But as it’s Easter, we decided to have a bit of fun.
Which egg tasted the worst?
Overall, as you might have expected, the cheapest chocolate tasted the worst. According to most of our taste testers, the Lidl bunny had an odd aftertaste – although personally, I must admit, I really liked it and could have kept munching on it all day!
So did the most expensive egg taste the best?
Interestingly, the most expensive egg, which cost £12.99 from Waitrose, came second-to-last. Tasters described it as ‘bland’ and ‘a bit strange’.
But to be fair, eggs from Thorntons and Marks & Spencer did do pretty well, landing second and third place respectively. So at least you will get value for money there.
However, in the end, the tastiest Easter Egg was also one of the cheapest – the Cadbury’s Button’s Egg, which cost just £1.69! Talk about money WELL SPENT...
That’s it from me today, thanks for watching lovemoney.com
