Barclaycard launches InterContinental Hotels Group reward card

Earn free hotel night stays across the world.

Barclaycard has launched a new hotel reward credit card.

It’s joined forces with the InterContinental Hotels Group to create the IHG Rewards Club Premium Visa.

What you can get

The IHG Rewards Club Premium Visa allows you to build up IHG Reward Club bonus points, which can be redeemed for hotel night stays at any of the 4,700 IHG hotels worldwide.

You’ll get four points for every £1 spent at IHG hotels or overseas and two points for every £2 spent elsewhere.

To help you on your way you’ll bank a massive 20,000 IHG Reward Club bonus points with the very first purchase you make, so long as it is within 90 days of opening the account.

On top of these benefits you’ll also get a free night voucher when you spend £10,000 in a year, plus you’ll get guaranteed IHG Rewards Club Platinum Elite status for as long as you hold the card.

The IHG Rewards Club Premium Visa also comes with 15 months of 0% interest on balance transfers made within 60 days of opening the account, so if you have some debt to shift you can move it over, though you’ll need to pay a 2.99% fee.

The card attracts a £99 annual fee and has a representative 42.2% APR.

IHG Rewards Club benefits

The IHG Reward Club points you build up can be redeemed for a stay at any of the 4,700 IHG hotels worldwide (with no blackout dates).

Alternatively they can be swapped for shopping rewards or can be converted into airmiles with a range of frequent flyer programmes including British Airways Executive Club Avios and Virgin Atlantic Flying Club Miles.

Hotel brands under the IHG Group include Holiday Inn Express, Crowne Plaza, Hotel Indigo, Candlewood Suites and the InterContinental Hotels & Resorts.

Reward Nights can be obtained from 10,000 points per night, but for a limited time in selected locations you can get Reward Nights from 5,000 points with the special PointBreaks offer.

You can redeem Reward Nights with points and cash or just points. So you don’t have to spend them all in one go and even if you don’t have enough you can still get the benefit of a discount if you can top up with cash.

Other special deals for members include the chance to get four nights for three or at least 20% off weekend stays when you use your points to book through the scheme in cities across Europe at over 500 hotels this summer.

Other hotel reward credit cards

If you like the sound of a hotel rewards card that is focused on earning free hotel night stays, there are a couple of others to consider.

If you're a fan of the Starwood group of hotels, which includes brands like the Sheraton and the Westin, there’s the Starwood Preferred Guest American Express Credit Card. The card allows you to earn Starpoints when you spend. You’ll get one Starpoint for every £1 spent on the card. As a bonus you’ll get 10,000 Starpoints - enough for up to three complimentary nights - when you spend £1,000 within your first three months.

You’ll also get a free weekend night stay when you spend £25,000 on the account in a year. However, the card attracts an annual fee of £75 and comes with a representative APR of 36.2%.

If the Hilton Worldwide group, which includes brands like Hilton, Double Tree and Waldorf Astoria, is more your bag there’s the Barclaycard Hilton HHonors Platinum Visa. The card allows you to earn HHonors Bonus Points when you spend. You’ll get three points for every £1 spent within Hilton Worldwide and two for every £1 spent elsewhere.

As an added reward you’ll get a free night when you spend £750 in the first 90 days with card and earn 2,500 Bonus Points for each of your first four stays at any Hilton Worldwide hotel in your first 12 months of card membership. The card is fee free and come with a representative APR of 18.9%.
