Black Friday: older shoppers spend the most on bargains, discounts, sales and offers
When it comes to bagging bargains, older shoppers appear to be at the forefront.
Black Friday and Cyber Monday, two of the most-hyped days for shoppers to secure discounts and bargains, are now behind us. And it appears that older people may have been the ones most determined to secure a deal.
Figures from Royal Bank of Scotland and NatWest revealed that their customers aged over 50 bought the most across the two days, spending an average of £88.16 each. In contrast 18-25 years olds spent just £36.61 each.
The data also found that men spent more than women £67.50 on average compared to £62.94, with older men pushing the boat out far more than anyone else with an average spend of £94.54.

How Black Friday changed in 2015
There was a marked change in the way we shopped the sales this year compared with the carnage last year. Several stores spread their sales over a number of days to avoid the bad press of human avalanches piling through the doors on Friday. But the notion that the shops would be packed caused many shoppers to stay at home.
Springboard, a company that tracks the number of shoppers, reported that footfall across the UK for the weekend was down 9.6% on the year before.
“The volume of activity in retail stores over the Friday and Saturday of the Black Friday weekend is lower than last year and the evidence clearly points to the fact that much of this is due to a significant increase in shoppers using online to participate in the event,” said Diane Wehrle, marketing and insights director at Springboard.
“The growth of click and collect in supporting store visits should not be underestimated, particularly for retail parks, with many shoppers now opting to buy online but to then visit stores to pick up their purchases.”
Amazon and John Lewis report record sales
Amazon has been one of the first stores to report on Black Friday. It said last Friday was its busiest UK day on record with over 7.4 million sales. People were snapping up deals on the website at a rate of around 86 a second.
Shoppers also flocked to the John Lewis website. The retailer has reported that Friday was its largest ever single day of sales. The website took 4.9 orders per second between 9am and 10am. Overall John Lewis saw a 11.9% rise in sales compared to 2014’s Black Friday.
Analysts believe the nation’s shops took more than £1 billion in sales on Friday, marking a new record for the UK retail sector.
