What are your biggest money regrets?

Updated on 07 December 2015 | 0 Comments

It's easy to make mistakes when it comes to our finances.

With the end of the year fast approaching it’s a good time to look back and take stock of the past 12 months.

Standard Life has done just that with a survey looking at the biggest financial regrets of 2015.

It found a third (32%) of people would liked to have save more, while 18% said they regretted not budgeting.

Not paying more into a pension (14%) and spending too much money on eating out (13%) were also high on the list of money misdemeanours participants admitted to.

But it wasn’t all bad, as 27% said they didn’t have any financial regrets at all in 2015.

Our money regrets

Here at loveMONEY we're not short on money regrets either.

Dom Eames, Editor-in-Chief, confessed: "I regret not buying more property sooner, not investing in a pension sooner, and not investing in shares that I knew would do well sooner."

Simon Ward, Managing Editor, admitted: “I spent a bit too much money eating, drinking and being merry when I was younger and had more disposable income, rather than saving for the future. I’m trying to make up for it now by staying in more.”

loveMONEY writer Morgan Reardon was also regretful about not saving while she had the chance. She said: "I’m pretty basic when it comes to money – I don’t even own a credit card – but I’d have to say my biggest money regret was not learning how to be a better saver when I was younger. In particular when I lived at home and worked full time, I should have gone to a bank and set up some sort of smart savings account but instead I spent it frivolously. I wish someone had helped me or pushed me in the right direction."

Anna Jordan, loveMONEY writer, also had a long list. She said: "I regret not planning carefully enough for holidays and leaving financial bits and pieces until days, or even hours, before I travel. In the past I’ve ended up paying more for things like currency, fees, flights and souvenirs. It really adds a hefty chunk on to your holiday bill!

"Something I’ll probably regret in future is not setting up a personal pension pot earlier. I’m still in my mid-20s but I could have already stashed a fair bit away by now. It’s definitely on my New Year’s resolution list."
