Get £5 back at Lidl when you use your American Express card

Updated on 09 April 2019 | 0 Comments

You can now shop with your American Express credit card at Lidl, but claiming the cash isn’t quite so simple

You can get £5 back if you spend £20 or more at Lidl using your American Express card before 17 May.

However, it’s not quite as simple as turning up and paying: you’ll need to register your card for the offer first.

You can do this on the American Express website or mobile app.

It’s worth signing up sooner rather than later, as the offer is limited to the first 50,000 customers to ‘save’ the offer, not the first 50,000 to spend £20.

You can still get the £5 bonus if you use American Express cards through Apple Pay or Google Pay.

However, you won’t get the £5 bonus if you use ‘payment aggregators’ like the Curve card.

Earn 5% cashback for the first three months with the American Express Platinum Everyday Cashback Card

American Express now at Lidl

The £5 bonus is to mark American Express cards being accepted at Lidl.

It joins fellow budget supermarket Aldi, which started accepting the cards last year, as well as Asda, Iceland, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s, Tesco, Waitrose and Ocado.

Not all Co-operative stores accept American Express, however.

If you live near a supermarket that does accept American Express, it could be worth getting one.

That’s because Amex cards typically offer higher cashback or rewards than Visa or Mastercard equivalents, but don’t cost any more to use, since fees were banned.

Just make sure you can pay off the balance every month, because Amex cards tend to charge high interest rates. Otherwise, look at our guide to 0% purchase cards.

American Express cards to consider

If the Lidl – American Express partnership tips the scales for you, these are the American Express cards to consider:

Platinum Cashback Everyday Credit Card (22.9% APR) & Platinum Cashback Card (28.2% APR)

Both these cards pay cashback – 5% in the first three months, up to the value of £100 and £125 respectively.

After that, the cards pay 0.5% and 1% cashback respectively, with the Platinum Cashback Card charging a £25 annual fee in return for the more generous rates.

American Express Rewards Credit Card (22.9% APR)

This card earns Membership Rewards Points, at a rate of one per £1 spent, which can be converted to airmiles (generally at a 1:1 ratio) or used to pay for Amazon and other online purchases.

If you spend £10,000 points in the first three months you’ll get 10,000 points, enough for a return flight to Europe. The card has no annual fee.
