Energy tariffs and suppliers, and water metering, on return to UK

After living and working in Europe since 2006, my wife and I are looking to retire and return to the UK (I know it sounds crazy but we have a very nice house on the Yorkshire coast). Our house has been rented and the tenants had prepayment energy meters installed. After much to-and-fro with British Gas I have finally managed to return us to credit metering paying by Direct Debit. Having been out of the UK energy market for over 15 years I would appreciate advice on the best tariffs and energy suppliers available at the moment. Would a fixed-rate be advisable ahead of the October cap rise?

A related question is having a water-meter installed. In Portugal our water is metered and we pay for our consumption. With Yorkshire Water we pay a monthly fee. Has anyone found water meters offer a more economic alternative?

Thanks for any advice and best regards to all.
Enoch
